Leadership Assembly!

(0)
This fun and original assembly aims to assist children in understanding the value of effective leadership, through: -Understanding what leadership is and recognising why it is important (with the help of a funny, purposeful video, which is hyperlinked into the presentation); -Finding out about great leaders and their achievements from across history and in the modern day; -Demonstrating the power of leadership through an engaging and powerful ‘blindfold challenge’ game; -Looking at everyday activities and considering which require effective leadership skills; -Understanding how and why leadership can be important in school, and thinking about how they would use teamwork in different scenarios; -Ending with a hymn about leadership. This assembly is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. It is comprehensive (26 slides in total) and the slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. For example, there are references to scenarios and dilemmas that they themselves might find themselves in order to help them to make the right choices in their own lives. No further resources are required except a blindfold for the challenge activity - everything else that you need to present the assembly is included. The assembly presentation is fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes to assist the speaker just in case. Hope that you find this useful!

A Different Sort of Normal - Two Whole Class Reading Sessions!

(0)
This resource pack of 2 sequenced whole class reading sessions aims to develop children’s comprehension skills whilst learning about autism spectrum disorder. Children read key extracts from the text ‘A Different Sort of Normal’ by Abigail Balfe in two stages (both hyperlinked and provided as PDFs). Each reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in years 3-5, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.

Stone Cold - Homelessness!

(1)
This engaging and informative lesson helps students to understand one of the key themes running throughout Robert Swindells’ Stone Cold: Homelessness. Students use key information, research skills, and extracts from the text to understand how and why homelessness happens and who it can affect, before composing their own arguments about how they believe homelessness should be tackled. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: - Considering their own views towards homeless people, and thinking about how these were formed; - Researching how and why people become homeless, and who it affects ; - Reading an extract from 'Stone Cold' in which Link describes a night on the streets, to better empathise with those who are sleeping rough; - Answering comprehension questions about the extract, considering the writer's use of language and retrieving textual information to back up their ideas; - Forming their own arguments about how homelessness should be tackled, using their own research and the information gathered throughout the lesson; - Peer assessing each other's learning attempts; Included is: - Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; - Research Template; - Selected extracts - Stone Cold - Link's description of a night on the streets; - Writing to Argue Helpsheet; - Comprehensive lesson plan. There are also opportunities for group learning, speaking and listening, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. I originally used these resources with a year 8 class, however colleagues have used them for between years 5 and 9 with minimal adaptations. Please note that internet access/ use of research mechanisms is required for the introduction task. This fun and original assembly aids children in understanding the value of being thankful for what they have in their lives, through: Understanding what thankfulness is, and recognising why it is important; Learning the importance of living life being thankful for what we do have, rather than being focusing too heavily on what we don’t have; Considering the positive aspects of their lives, and considering those less fortunate than themselves; Learning strategies to demonstrate thankfulness in their own lives. This assembly is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. The session also includes an interesting story, which demonstrates how our outlook, morale and behaviour changes as we become more thankful. Furthermore, there is an internet link to a beautiful, thought-provoking video which demonstrates how far too often we spend time focused on what we don’t have, rather than the many ways in which we are fortunate. There are also various discussion prompts to enable children to understand how they can be thankful in different areas of their own lives. The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included to pages of notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!

Humility - Collective Worship!

(0)
This fun and original collective worship session aims to assist children in understanding what humility is, and the value of remaining humble. In a Christian context, children understand that it is God’s wish for all people to remain humble, and to not fall into the pitfalls that arrogance, pride, and vanity can bring. Short, child-friendly Bible stories (‘King Nebuchadnezzar’ and ‘Solomon’) also help them to understand the key message. This session is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. For example, there are references to scenarios and dilemmas that they themselves might find themselves in (for example winning at a sports match, or being very skilled at something), in order to help them to make the right choices in their own lives. The session also includes a fun role-play task, a beautiful, thought-provoking video about the importance of humility, and a top ten tips for remaining humble information slide. All other resources that you will need (for example the story readings) are provided in the pack. The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included two pages of notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!

Stone Cold - Assorted Resources! (PowerPoints, Activities, Worksheets, Templates, etc.)

(1)
This pack contains a vast number (I think there's about 20 resources here) of activities, resources, and ideas for the teaching of Robert Swindell's 'Stone Cold.' They should provide an excellent starting point for anybody who wants to teach the book and is looking for some inspiration for individual lesson content/ tasks. The vast majority of these tasks can be adapted for differing age groups/ ability ranges/ needs. The pack contains resources that focus on the key themes in the book, such as stereotyping, alienation, and homelessness. There are also resources that enable to build individual reading skills, such as inferring and deducing, pulling out quotations, and analysing language. In writing, students learn to think imaginatively and create texts appropriate to audience and purpose. All images are licensed for commercial use, and are cited on the final slides of the PowerPoints.
